Baccarat History

Baccarat has a long history of establishment and popularity, making it the most historic game activated in modern casinos. It dates back to the middle ages, to Italy, when the game was played with parts of a Tarot deck. The game migrated to France, where it became the game of the aristocracy. The word "baccarat" means "zero" in Italian.

In France, the game developed into two versions: European baccarat and the French game “chemin de fer.” It is the second one that is closest to what is played in modern casinos, with only a few small variations to make them inconsistent.

What is now known, as American baccarat is the variation that was picked up in England, and then spread to South America. It was in 1950 at the Dunes casino in that the game was finally introduced to Las Vegas’ casinos.

Today, baccarat is still one of the most stylish games among the “aristocracy” and high rollers. Baccarat tables are usually surrounded with elegance that compliments its high-class association; this includes areas that are separated from the rest of a casino. This explains why there are so many stories about rich gamblers betting a million dollars at just one sitting.

There are high rollers that visit Las Vegas from the whole world over, simply to experience the luxurious entertainment of this historically opulent game. In fact, it is usually safe to judge how well a casino is doing at any given time, just by observing what it makes at those specific tables!
